We made it. I’m alive. I don’t have to sleep under a car. Hallelujah. Praise God. This is already shaping up to be the most insane trip ever. And I kind of like it. To get here we had to ride a train, get on a plane, take an hour and half bus ride, walk for 45 minutes get lost three times, find the hotel, navigate the maze, and finally we found Gabriel – he was like a guardian angel.
There are some really creepy guys here. On the train I met a guy named Castilo. He came and sat down across from me so I thought hey why not interview him for journalism? Didn’t work out the only word he knows in English is no. But he did keep asking me my name, my age, where I’m from, etc. Then he got really weird and started taking pictures on his phone of everyone in our group. When he got off he stood on the platform and waved goodbye. I really hope I don’t run into him again. And just a few pointers for European guys “Hey baby what you doing tonight” will never work.
On the plane I met two guys named David and Simeon they were very funny and kind of cute, and from Florence! Perfect! I can interview them. Nope their English is not that good. I did have a fun time trying to talk to them and playing along with all of David’s failed card tricks. After about an hour I was getting “I love you, I love you.” Well that was entertaining at least. I wouldn’t recommend Ryan Air to anyone though.
After getting off the bus Barcelona we go with a bit bigger group of people who are staying in the same area as we are. Well it turns out that the leader of the pack is a guy they happened to meet on the plane (visions of Taken were popping into my head). Ryan turned out to be a pretty cool guy. He’s a hockey player from Chicago who has been traveling the world for a few years and will return home for the first time next week for his mom’s 50th birthday. He’s a beast – 6’4” hockey player with bowlegs and fluent in Spanish – a pretty nice guy to have around.
Our hotel, which actually turned out to be an apartment, is a maze in itself. There are so many levels with winding staircases and hidden hallways. I think we’ll be pretty safe here I doubt anyone can find us. I just hope that we can find a way out.
